Why request samples from the ISB?

The IVI International Sperm Bank provides a MULTIPLE WARRANTY OF USE in relation to donor selection, sperm sample quality, safe frozen sample storage, delivery and results.

1) Donor selection

Donors are tested to rule out sexually transmitted and hereditary diseases.

Prior studies
Samples are frozen in quarantine until subsequent analyses confirm the absence of infections.
Donors also have to complete a full questionnaire about the presence of hereditary conditions in their close relatives and a behavioural risk questionnaire, supervised by one of the bank's specialists.

The health status of donors is verified even after they cease to provide the bank with samples.

These tests are even more demanding than those required by Spanish and international legislation.

2) Samples

Sample quality
The frozen sperm samples we dispatch contain sufficient spermatozoa with progressive motility (type A+B), according to World Health Organisation criteria, for artificial insemination or IVF, depending on the type of sample.

All our samples meet these criteria, as they have been tested in origin, guaranteeing their quality after thawing. Even so, the bank should be informed of any deliveries failing to meet these conditions, so that it can apply a discount to future deliveries should the bank confirm the situation when it tests the representative aliquots that it keeps in storage.

3) Deliveries

Deliveries are made in dry ice at -80ºC, guaranteeing the integrity of the cold chain, as samples are strictly controlled and monitored at all times. There is total traceability from the point of origin to the point of destination.
Average lead time is 7-10 working days (in Spain) to anywhere in the world (although usually less), after confirming receipt of advance payment.

Depending on the place of delivery, the transport company will personally contact the addressee in order to arrange the most convenient delivery time and date.

We have broad experience in sending samples worldwide and are able to dispatch sperm samples with practically no risk of incident to anywhere in the world.

4) Results

The results expected from the use of donor sperm samples for artificial insemination and in vitro fertilisation are extremely variable, as they depend on a large number of different parameters, such as the patient's age, her gynaecological history and the reproduction treatment protocols applied.

5) Sperm sample storage

All our clinics are equipped with storage tanks for sperm samples in gaseous phase, preventing the transmission of infectious particles between the different samples stored in the same tank. The vehicle used is liquid nitrogen.

This new technology, which has been installed this year in the IVI Group, comes in advance of future changes in European tissue storage standards, providing an additional sample storage guarantee.
